Support arrangements for students unable to come onto campus

We are continuing all online support and activities to support those students who cannot attend campus.

There are a number of circumstances in which you may be unable to attend on-campus.  Some of these circumstances are outlined below, along with the support and arrangements which can be offered.

Students who need to self-isolate during the year

During the academic year, you may be required to self-isolate for a ten-day period for the following reasons:

  • If you develop COVID-19 symptoms or live with someone who develops symptoms
  • If NHS Test and Trace or the University contact you to advise that you have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19
  • If you are travelling back from a country outside the UK which is not on the Government’s ‘green’ list. You can find more information about this on our ‘Arriving in the UK’ FAQ page

You will be able to notify the University if you are in any of these situations before you arrive at the University through the Pre- and Re-Enrolment Portals or during the year through e:vision. During the period that you are self-isolating, you will have access to online learning and teaching activities, but additional support will be provided for the on-campus activities that you miss.

If you do become unwell, we are here to support you. Once you inform us that you are unwell through e:vision, our student support teams will make contact with you to see what support you may need. If you are well enough to continue studying, then you will have access to online learning and teaching activities and additional support will be provided for the on-campus activities that you miss. If you are unwell and unable to study, please don’t worry and focus on getting better. We will support you to catch up with the learning you have missed once you are feeling better.  

If you do not have suitable facilities to self-isolate or quarantine, the Green does have some short-term accommodation available. You may of course self-isolate in other accommodation if you are able to and wish to. The Student Life Team will also be able to support any pastoral needs, such as helping with food and other essential supplies. If you are self-isolating or quarantining at any point in the year, you will be contacted by student services to see what support you may need. Self-isolating can be a difficult and lonely time and we advise you to use our range of mental health services if you need support.

Students with long-term health conditions

We understand that some students may have specific medical circumstances which limit their ability to come to campus. If this applies to you, then your personal circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis, to determine the best course of action for you. 

If this applies to you, you should contact Disability Services, who will discuss your circumstances with you and then facilitate a conversation with you and your programme team to determine how we can best support you. 

How we support you will depend on your circumstances and your programme of study. We will take all reasonable steps to support you, however there may be some programmes where we cannot support the full learning journey remotely. Where this is the case, we can discuss with you a different pattern of study

This process is not just COVID-related – we already work with students who identify as clinically vulnerable to create Learner Support Profiles which set out reasonable adjustments to their learning.  This includes whether they are able to attend campus – if not, we set out how we will support them and if that is reasonable. No student would ever be penalised but there may be programmes where we cannot support the full learning journey. For example, if a student was not able to go on placement, we would support them, but they would have to make up the placement at a later date.

International students who are not in the UK

Most programmes are currently being delivered online, and the Home Office is permitting distance learning during this period. We are following UK government guidance and will update students accordingly when this changes.
